What is Geology?
The movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
What is Heat Transfer?
The supercontinent of all the continents that were once joined together.
What is Pangaea?
The longest mountain chain in the world.
What is Mid-Ocean Ridge?
Geological theory that states that Earth's plates are in constant, slow, motion.
What is Plate Tectonics?
A layer of rock that forms Earth's outer skin
What is the Crust?
The heating and cooling of a liquid, the cycle of hot liquid rising and falling as it cools.
What is Convection Current?
Wegener's idea that the continents slowly moved over Earth's surface became known as what?
What is Continental Drift?
The process that continually adds new material to the ocean floor.
What is Sea Floor Spreading?
The place where two plates move apart, or diverge. Mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys occur here.
What is Divergent Boundary?
A layer of hot rock beneath the Earth's crust
What is the Mantle?
The measure of how much mass a substance has.
What is Density?
The process where the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle.
What is Subduction?
The place where two plates slip past each other, moving in opposite directions. Earthquakes occur here.
What is Transform Boundary?
This part of Earth's layers consists of two parts -- the inner and the outer. The out is a layer of molten metal and the inner is a dense ball of solid metal.
What is the Core?
There are three types of heat transfer. Name them AND define them.
Radiation - the transfer of energy through empty space.
Conduction - heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter.
Convection - heat transfer by the movement of a heated liquid.
Where the ocean floor plunges into a deep under water canyon.
What is deep-ocean trenches?
The place where two plates come together, or converge. Trenches form here.
What is Convergent Boundary?
The layer of the mantle right below the lithosphere. The material of this layer is somewhat soft -- it can bend like plastic.
