When the car was developed, the shape and size of cities changed quickly as people were able to move farther away from the centre of town. A great deal of land was taken over to accommodate the car. As technology developments change the nature of factories and manufacturing to lighter cleaner industry, old heavy industrial land use areas are sometimes abandoned. New industrial parks are built in the outskirts of towns and cities.

The trend since then has been a steady decline in farming jobs so taht today very few people are left working in agriculture. The job rate trend in information workers has climbed from about 1960 on. Examples being more use of machinery requiring less labour. Trends in information systems are expansion of e-commerce both for business and retailing
