Name three types of maps that were shown in class and what they display

Relief: physical features

Political: boundaries, capitals, etc

Population: use dots/shading to show where ppl live

Climate: uses color to show rainfall/temperature

Land use: show what the land is being used for (ex: agriculture)

Topographic: uses contour lines/shading to show elevation, landforms and coastal features

Economic: uses symbols to show the location of types of economic activities

Geological: shows types of rocks and fault line

Road: major roads, highways, airports, etc

Outline one difference between a plan and a photograph

A plan is always drawn from a birds eye view, but a photograph can be taken at many different angles (oblique/vertical angle or ground level).

A photograph is obtained immediately while a plan takes a while to make, etc.

Why do you need a map when you have GPS? (at least two reasons)

If you were to rely on a GPS and it malfunctions, you would not be able to direct yourself. Not all places are on a GPS, and a GPS only shows direction. A map cannot malfunction, (although it may take a while) anyone can create a map to show anywhere. Even if you use GPS, it is important to know how to read/represent things on a map because it can also show the distribution of something, height of areas, etc.

510

Differentiate between place and region.

Place is the physical and human characteristics of one, singular area while region grouping of multiple areas based on their similar human/physical characteristics

510

Differentiate between inner and outer planets

Inner planets have terrestrial surfaces, hotter temperatures, smaller sizes and shorter orbits. Outer planets are larger, made out of gas, colder and have longer orbits

510

Outline two reasons why geography is important.

Develops research skills, promotes numeracy, teaches citizenship, exposes you to ICT, lets you understand global links, lets you understand interdependence, uses resources sustainable manner, natural disasters, protects the earth, etc

510

Define population distribution and population density.

Population distribution: How people spread out over a given region

Population density: The number of people in a square unit of area in each place.

1300

Outline three purposes of a scale on a map.

The scale on a map is a tool that can be used to indicate the amount by which an area has been reduced.

The scale on a map is used to determine the distance between two or more places and the actual size of an area.

The scale on a map indicates the relationship between distances on the map and distances on the ground.

1300

Define movement and Location. Identify the five themes of geography.

Movement: An interaction with the environment in order to transport people, ideas, goods, services/physical systems

Location: Where something can be found whether in relation to another place (relative location) or by its co-ordinates (absolute location)

Movement, region, human environment interaction, location, place

Why do poorly drained areas not have high populations?

Swamps do not provide a firm foundation and are not suitable for building houses. Swamps are not attractive to persons either because they are associated with reptiles and insects that spread diseases
