What two questions guide geographers in their work?
What is where things are located and why they are located there.
100
How could you explain to someone the difference between place and location?
What is location is exact by using degrees on the map but a place is described by characteristics such as "it is hilly," or "it is a small town with green trees year round."
100
If I were explaining to a 3rd grader what a scale on a map was I would say....
What is a scale takes something big and makes it small. For example, a map is of Earth but you cant make a map as big as Earth so you would have one inch on a map equal 400 miles etc.
100
What is a projection?
What is a flat representation of the globe.
100
The Equator runs.....
What is East to West
200
Name the five themes of geography.
What is location, place, region, movement and human-environment interaction.
200
Which key terms can be used to describe location?
What is latitude, longitude, parallels, meridians, and degrees.
200
If I were a mapmaker, I would explain to people that maps are distorted because....
What is a map is a flat representation of a 3D object. So if you flatten a globe, you would have gaps just like you were peeling an orange.
200
What are the two most commonly used types of projections?
What is the Mercator and Robinson projections.
200
The Prime Meridian runs...
What is North to South
300
List some examples of human-environment interaction. Does it always have to be a negative effect?
What is deforestation, building parks, planting trees. Some human-environment interaction is positive, like planting trees or preserving nature.
300
Explain how the themes of geography intermingle with one another.
What is a region or place can have a definite location. Movement can involve human-environment interaction etc.
300
If I were a sailor I would use.... (a type of projection)... because....
What is I would use a Mercator projection because it has the most accurate lines of latitude and longitude, and accurate shapes of oceans.
300
True or false, the Mercator projection is the most commonly used map projection.
What is false, the Robinson is most commonly used.
300
What is the difference between a compass rose and cardinal directions?
What is a compass rose uses a magnetic needle to locate the cardinal direction of North while cardinal directions are N, S, E, W
400
How do geographers use the themes of geography to classify information?
What is it allows them to make comparisons as to why things are located somewhere for example, plants. this also can tell how the economy is effected or how certain regions have similarities amongst themselves.
400
Give an example of each theme.
What is answers will vary.
400
If I were traveling in Europe I would use....(type of projection)... because....
What is I would use a Robinson projection because it shows accurate land shapes and sizes.
400
Name two major similarities between the Robinson and Mercator projections.
What is they are both distorted around the poles and the equator on both equators are accurate.
400
Name the two Tropic lines of Latitude and their location.
What is Tropic of Cancer, 22 degrees North of Equator and Tropic of Capricorn, 22 degrees South of Equator.
500
Explain how Oxford, PA can be an example of each theme in geography.
What is it is a place because it is describe as a rural area. It can be a location because there are different addresses in Oxford that may be located using degrees of latitude and longitude. It can be movement because the population has steadily increased throughout the past ten years. it shows human-environment interaction because we have new shopping centers and a lot of agriculture. It is a part of the East Coast region and has particular characteristics to classify itself.
500
Why do geographers ask where things are located and why?
What is it helps them to explain trends from region to region such as climate, vegetation, and economics.
500
If I were Miss Rowley, I would tell 6th Grade two advantages and disadvantages of the Mercator and Robinson projection by saying......
What is the Robinson projection has accurate land masses and accurate lines of latitude however, it is distorted around the edges and the lines of longitude are curved. The Mercator projection shows accurate size of oceans and can be used for sea navigation however, it is also distorted around the poles and does not have accurate land mass size.
500
Name two major differences between the Robinson and Mercator projections.
What is the Mercator projection is used for sea navigation because the oceans are less distorted. The Robinson projection is used more for land navigation because it shows more accurate landmass shapes and sizes
500
Explain what lines of latitude, longitude, parallels, and meridians have in common.
What is lines of latitude run East to West and are the same as parallels while lines of longitude run North to South and are the same as meridians.
