Why Recess Matters

Recess is an important part of the school day for students. It gives children a chance to move their bodies and take a break from learning in the classroom. According to many teachers, students who have recess are able to focus better when they return to class. In addition, playing outside with classmates helps children build social skills like sharing and teamwork. Without recess, students may feel tired, restless, and less ready to learn. For these reasons, recess should not be taken away from students.

Main Claim: Recess is an important part of the school day and should not be taken away.

Evidence from the text:

  1. “Students who have recess are able to focus better when they return to class.”
  2. “Playing outside with classmates helps children build social skills like sharing and teamwork.”

Read this short fable. Identify the moral and explain how an event in the story supports that moral.

Fable: The Lion and the Mouse

One day, a lion was sleeping in the forest when a small mouse ran across his paw. The lion woke up and caught the mouse. The mouse begged, “Please let me go, and I will help you someday.” The lion laughed at the idea but decided to let the mouse go.

Later, the lion was caught in a hunter’s net. He roared loudly, unable to escape. The mouse heard him and quickly ran over. Using its sharp teeth, the mouse gnawed through the ropes and set the lion free.

The lion said, “Thank you. I see now that even a small friend can be a great help.”

Moral: Even small acts of kindness can be repaid, and even small creatures can be helpful.

Supporting Event: The mouse helps the lion by chewing through the net and setting him free, showing that even though the mouse is small, it can still make a big difference.
