Choose between God and Precious Materials. Explain why this is a cause of the age of exploration.
God: spreading religion and trying to gain more followers was a motivating factor for exploration. Countries wanted their religion to be bigger by gaining more believers which inspired explorers to find "new" people to try and convert.
Precious Materials: searching for unique things like spices from India to add intrigue and variety to a country motivated exploration; different from gold because these were often products rather than raw goods
Choose between the Settlement of Jamestown and the Treaty of Tordesillas. Explain why this is a key event of the age of exploration.
Settlement of Jamestown: first American settlement that succeeded; showed the American East coast was habitable and could support people, promoting further exploration.
Treaty of Tordesillas: settles land disputes between Spain and Portugal; they had been exploring the American continents but because of the glory of exploration, they fought over indigenous people, resources, and land. This treaty settles those fights and is one of the first treaties in the western hemisphere dividing up land among nations.
Choose between the Slave Trade and the Middle Passage. Explain why this is an effect of the age of exploration.
Slave Trade: thru exploration, "new" people were discovered by the powerful countries and were taken advantage of because of their perceived inferiority. An economic profit came out of this trading of people for slavery, creating an appeal for countries to engage in this slave trade. Exploration--"new" "inferior" people discovered--those people exploited--economic benefit.
Middle Passage: this route of travel became popular once the slave trade became popular; prior to the growth of the slave trade, this passage was not a major travel route
Choose between the Ottoman Empire and Glory. Explain why this is a cause of the age of exploration.
Ottoman Empire: this strong empire took over the region near the Silk Road and controlled land exploration, driving exploration elsewhere
Glory: rulers' pride and competitiveness drives exploration; desiring to be better than other countries, have more colonies or people, or just being a bigger country in land mass promoted exploration
Choose between Vasco de Gamma and Megallen circumnavigating the globe. Explain why this is a key person/event of the age of exploration.
Vasco de Gamma: showed the possibility of traveling by boat thru the ocean--opens exploring up to further distances than previously thought possible
Megallen: gave an account of his travels and showed the vastness of the world; showed how much of the world was unexplored and inspired travelers to go to these "undiscovered" areas
Choose between the Columbian Exchange and Triangular Trade. Explain why this is an effect of the age of exploration.
Columbian Exchange: exploration led to the exchange of goods from the new world to the old world and vice versa; upon discovering the new world was habitable and had precious materials and raw goods, people made money off exchanging them for things from the old world
Triangular Trade: exploration led to discovering new goods in newly discovered places; then people learned that other people in the world wanted the goods and thus exchanging goods from Africa to America to England and back to Africa began as they all wanted similar things from each other.
