What is a greenhouse gas?

It is a gas in our atmosphere that traps and hold onto heat.

100

What is weather?

Short term changes to our atmosphere.

100

Rising ________ levels is one of the most well known consequences of global climate change.

Sea

100

This is where the majority of Earth's energy comes from

The Sun

100

Fossil fuels are a ______________ resource.

non-renewable

200

Why is the increase of Greenhouse gasses a big issue?

It causes climate change and increase in the global temerature

200

What is the atmosphere?

The layer of gas that surrounds the Earth.
200

This consequence forces people out of their home due to climate change. For example, people who live on the coast whose homes are destroyed due to coastal flooding.

Climate refugees

200

True or false: Humans are changing Earth's natural energy budget

true

200

What are some means of transportation that use fossil fuels? (name at least three)

Cars, planes, trains, ships/boats, airplanes

300

One example of a greenhouse gas AND where it mostly comes from.

Methane: Cows (burp and fart it)

Water vapor: Gaseous form of water (when bodies of water on Earth warm up, they release water vapor)

Carbon dioxide: Burning fossil fuels

Nitrous oxide: Agricultural fertilizer

300

What is a fossil fuel? (be specific)

Fuel consisting of the remains of organisms preserved in rocks in the Earth's crust.

300

An example of this consequence is Maine lobster businesses struggling due to lobsters migrating out of the Gulf of Maine to colder, Canadian waters.

Loss of industry

300

What is the difference between absorption and reflection?

-Absorption: a process that means to take in or soak up something.

-Reflection: The act of sending back light, sound, heat, or energy from a surface

300
What is the connection between burning fossil fuels and climate change?

Burning fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide.

400

Why is the greenhouse effect sometimes a good thing?

Because without it, Earth would be too cold to inhabit. It keeps our planet warm.

400

What is deforestation?

The practice of removing a lot of trees from a forest all at once, usually to use the land to grow crops or feed animals.

400

As global warming continues, the intensity of what type of storm that hits coastlines is predicted to increase?

Hurricanes/Tropical Storms

400

True or False: When sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, it is both reflected and absorbed by clouds and the Earth's surface.

True

400

Where are fossil fuels stored in the Earth?

Deep under the Earth's crust (first layer of the Earth).

500

What two human activities are the largest contributors of greenhouse gases in the United States?

transportation (burning fossil fuels) and deforestation

500
Use the word emission(s) in a sentence relating to climate change.

Mrs. Lisac will determine if it is correct :)

500

Melting _______________ can release a lot of freshwater, methane and even bacteria/viruses.

Permafrost
500

This wasn't taught to you in class, so use some critical thinking :) You need to answer both parts correctly to get 500 points.

Part 1: When sunlight hits ice or snow, is it reflected or absorbed?

Part 2: How does this impact climate change?

When sunlight hits ice or snow, it is reflected back into space (this is called the albedo effect).

This impacts climate change because if sea ice is melting at a faster rate due to warming oceans, the ocean then absorbs the sunlight instead of reflecting it, which makes the ocean even warmer.

500

What other, non-transportation related industry uses fossil fuels and releases greenhouse gases? (2 possible options)

Plastic and asphalt formation
