Test question?

Test answer!

100

What is a diet?

While a diet is most broadly the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats (i.e. a dog on a kibble diet), it can also mean a special course of food to which one restricts oneself.

What is an example of how food affects your mood?

Lack of food can make you irritable (being "hangry"), a sugar crash can make you tired, a good meal can leave you satisfied, etc.

200

How much water should we aim to drink in a day?

About 8 cups (or 2 liters). Can depend on things like what you eat, how active you are, and what the weather is!

What is diet culture?

Diet culture is a set of beliefs that values thinness and appearance. Diet culture often means restricting calories, normalizing negative self-talk, and labeling foods as “good” and “bad”. Diet culture sends the message that thinness and dieting equate to health, but that the pursuit of health makes someone better than others.

200

What's the most important part of healthy eating?

Eating lots of fruits and veggies (and having a balanced approach to food and nutrition)!
300

What an example of a food that has healthy fat?

Examples: nuts, seeds, avocados, salmon, olive oil, etc.
300

What is the difference between good or bad foods? What makes foods “good” or “bad”?

Food has no moral value, and it can't be "good" or "bad". You can decide what food to eat based on how it makes you feel, whether it is tasty, whether it gives you energy, etc. Food that is less healthy is not "bad", but maybe just something we choose less often.

300

What are calories?

A calorie is a unit of energy defined as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a quantity of water by one degree. Not really a useful metric for deciding what to eat!

400

Do you need to cut out a food group to be healthy? If so, which one?

No! Except for allergies or intolerances, no food needs to be cut out completely in a healthy diet.

400

What is the best method for a cleanse or detox?

Your body is the best method of cleansing or detoxing! Your liver, skin, immune system, and kidneys detox your body every day (and are very good at it!)

400

What are things to look for on a nutrition label?

It depends! You can look for protein for sustained energy, sodium if you want to limit how much salt you eat, sugar if you want to avoid a sugar crash, vitamins/minerals if you want to make sure you're getting them all, ingredients if you are curious about what goes into food, etc.

500

How can you tell just by looking at someone whether or not they are healthy?

It's not possible to tell- and it's not really important anyway! Thin people are not necessarily healthy, fat people are not necessarily unhealthy, and all people are deserving of respect anyways!

500

Will eating less make you weigh less? Why or why not?

Eating less will not make you weigh less! Why? Our bodies are smart and designed to naturally defend against weight loss at all costs in order to survive. Weight loss is a threat to the body as it interprets this as a famine. When your body doesn't have enough food, it learns to better adapt for the next time there is a restriction of food. One adaptation is storing fat due to energy deficit. Food deprivation can also lead to increased bingeing. Going on and off diets is a predictor of overall weight gain.

500

What percentage of body fat is healthy to have?

Anywhere between 14%-30%. All that is to say, that you need fat on your body to be healthy. It is also healthy (and expected) that your body will get more fat as it gets older.
