Where and When did Golf Originate?

It is believed to have started formally in Scotland and was called Gowf or Golf. It started around the 14th or 15th century.

What types of golf shots are typical in the game of golf?

The Drive-Starts at the Tee Box, typically longest hit

Fairway or Iron- Long Irons 2-4 are for fairway or tee box. Short Irons 5-9 are for Rough or Shorter Fairway or tee shots

Pitching/Chip Shots - Pitching wedge, Loft Wedges - Shorter Range Shots some times in special circumstance requiring spin - Chip and Run -quick punch with long run out or Lob Shots - high shots that stop quickly when landing

Bunker Shot- Sand wedge shot to get out of a sand trap or bunker

Putting- Green Play with Putter

What were the first Golf Balls and Golf Clubs made of?

Golf Balls- Started as wood then became leather filled with feathers. That progressed to rubber filled balls wrapped in rubber bands. Today they are filled with rubber and other core type and cased in a hard casing with dimples on it.

Golf Clubs had wooden ClubHeads and Shafts. later metal shafts were introduced and club heads progressed to metal as well. Now most club heads are metal and shafts can consist of Metal, Graphite or other similar products.

What are some Golf First Aid Scenarios that may occur on the course and how do recognize them and how do you handle them?

Dehydration/Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke- SIGNS- Nausea, Weakness, Headache, No Sweat(dehydration) Cool Pale Moist Skin & Sweating(Heat Exh or Stroke), Faintness, FatigueDrink lots of fluids to prevent. Get to shade, Loosen clothing or remove excess clothing. Put a cool damp towel on the person. Lay the person down out of the sun. Fan them with cool air. Call for help if severe.


Blisters - Use Moleskin if available to protect the blistered area. Drain with a clean needle. Keep area clean while it heals. Golf Gloves and properly fitting shoes can help to prevent this.

Strains and Sprains - prevent through stretching and exercising. If it occurs work to support or brace the strained muscle or joint and avoid use. Apply ice or a cold pack to the area affected to reduce swelling or inflamation

What is the Par system and how does it work on a golf course? 

The Par system is a rating given to each hole designed to indicate how many shots it should take you to finish a given hole. It is based on each hole taking 2 putts to finish. Therefore a Par 3 should take  1 shot from the tee box to get to the the green and the 2 putts to finish the whole. A Par 4 takes two shots from the tee box down the fairway to the green and then 2 putts. So on and so forth.

After Teeing off how do you typically determine who hits next? When putting who putts first?

Typically the person who is the furthest from the green will hit first. Putting is the same in that the person whose ball is furthest from the cup will put first.

What are the different parts of a golf club? What are the different types of golf clubs and how would you use them?

Grip, Shaft, ClubHead, Back, Hosel, Clubface, Sole

Driver- Tee Shot, Longest hitting Club

Woods - Tee Shot & Fairway, Longer hitting but lift better off short grass without a tee

Hybrids - Mix between a wood and an Iron. Added distance but hit well of shorter grass 

Irons - Numbered 2-9 Lower numbers are longer and flatter faced. Higher numbers are shorter and more open faced. Long Irons are for fairway, tee and some rough shots- longer to mid distance with less lift. Short Irons are for Shorter Fairway, Rough Shots. Open face for Higher shot, shorter distance.

Wedges- Pitching, Lob, Sand - Used for short range and specialty shots from sand, etc. Can produce spin to control ball when it hits the green.

Putter- used for putting - duh.

What is a hook? What is a slice? What is a Mulligan?

A hook is when a ball fades to the left of the instead of going straight. A slice is when the ball fades to the right instead of going straight. 

A Mulligan is a do-over or a free extra shot

What is a divot and what do you do if you create one? How do you repair a mark in the green?

A divot is a chunk of turf dug up in the process of swinging and hitting your golf ball. When possible you should work to replace the grass chunk into the divot that was created with your swing. When provided used the mixture provided to fill the divot you created.

When your ball hits the green and makes an impression into the grass making it uneven you need to repair it. Using a green repair tool stick it into the grass around the divot and work to push the grass inward to fill the divot. Do this around the outside of the divot. Once completed tamp the grass down with the bottom of your putter.

The British Open in 1860 in Prestwick, Scotland. There were only 8 competitors

What should you do when another player is hitting their ball?

Shut your mouth!! Be quiet. Watch for where there shot goes. Be aware of others preparing to swing so you don't get hit.

What are other items you need to play Golf?

Balls- know which ball is yours. You should never move your own ball or another players ball. Play it as it lies or incur a penalty

Tees- tees are only to be used on the tee box, never on the fairway or anywhere else on the course

Divot repair tool - Try to leave the course just as you found it. 

Ball Marker - at times your ball may be in the path of another's shot. Mark your ball with a ball marker so you can temporarily move you ball and be able to put it back where it belongs when it is your turn again.

Golf Glove- avoid blisters and improve your grip for better shots.

How does the Handicap System work?

Handicaps work to even the playing field. It is based on the average number of strokes it takes you to play a course or your score and the difficulty rating of the course. These combined help to create a number that matches up your average play ability with others who play the course. The handicap can then be applied to your score after a round of golf to put your score in line with a golfer who is better or worse based upon their average play on any given course.

What does USGA stand for, when was it established and what did/does it do?

United States Golf Association, Established in 1894. Worked to publish and maintain Golf's Rules, Established the Par System, created and conducted tournaments, invested in turf and other research to promote golf.

What are a few things you shouldn't do when on the green?

Work to not step in the path between a persons ball and the cup. 

Be careful when pulling the flagstick and laying it on the green to avoid damaging the greens surface. 

Never use a club to damage the surface of the green. 

Never use a club other than a putter on the green

Never drive a golf cart on a green or do anything to damage the green.

Once putting you always should remove the flagstick from the cup. If a player can't see the cup you can tend the flag by holding it in the cup while there person puts and once they have struck the ball remove the stick from the cup and out of the way of the putt.

How do you keep score? When are you assessed a penalty?

Score is kept by tracking the number of strokes you take to finish each whole. The lump sum of all strokes is your score for the round.

Penalties are assessed for the following

OB-out of bounds- Add 1 penalty stroke to your score

Water or other Hazard- if you can't play your ball and you have to use and place a new ball it is a 1 stroke penalty

Lost ball - 1 stroke Penalty

Place the ball in the original spot, use a drop zone, place it lateral, Place it in line with the original shot to the best of your ability behind where it left the boundary or entered the hazard

Is the cup always in the same place on the green?

No the cup will typically move around on the green throughout the season. Usually moving between the front, middle, and back of the green. Different color flagsticks are used to indicate which position the cup is currently locate  on the green.

What is the PGA and what does it do?

The Professional Golf Association. It organized competitive golf for Professional Golfers.

What are the Rules for Amateur Status?

Can't play for Prize Money

Can't receive payment for teaching golf

can't accept a tournament prize greater than $500

Can't accept golf equipment from a dealer without proper payment

Can't allow expenses to be paid for you to play in a tournament

These rules are to prevent a Pro Golfer from hustling Amateur golfers in tournament or anywhere.

Why is golf called a Gentlemans Sport?

Because it is self policed and relies on each individual to keep their own score, make sure they follow the rules, and act with integrity and respect for others and the course. It takes a gentleman to do that. So when we go play golf we need to do the same.
