What are Members of Parliament?

Members of Parliament (MPs) are individuals elected by citizens to represent their interests in a country’s legislative body, known as Parliament. MPs have the responsibility to participate in the law-making process, debate and vote on proposed legislation, and ensure that the government is held accountable. They serve as a link between the people and the government, representing the views and needs of their constituents in parliamentary discussions.

3 Similarities


1️⃣ The Crown as Head of State

All three systems recognize the British monarch (The Crown) as the official head of state.


2️⃣ Presence of a Governor

In each system, a Governor (or Governor-General) represents the Crown.


3️⃣ Formal System of Laws and Government

All three systems operate with established laws and an organized government structure.

2 Differences


1️⃣ Level of Local Representation


Old Representative System – Had an elected assembly, but voting was limited to wealthy landowners.


Crown Colony System – Very little or no elected representation; the Governor had most of the power.


Constitutional Monarchy – Citizens elect representatives who form the government.


2️⃣ Who Holds Real Power


Old Representative – Power was shared between the elected assembly and the Governor.


Crown Colony – The Governor (appointed by the Crown) had most of the authority.


Constitutional Monarchy – Real power lies with elected officials (Prime Minister and Parliament); the monarch’s role is mostly ceremonial.
