The story of the issues between Susanoo and Amaterasu and how they were resolved
Susanoo remained unpredictable and emotional. His grief for his mother manifested as destructive storms and violent behavior. Before being banished, Susanoo asked to bid farewell to Amaterasu. She demanded a contest to test his sincerity. Amaterasu produced three goddesses from Susanoo’s sword, while Susanoo produced five gods from her jewels. Since the gods originated from her item, Amaterasu won. Despite the ritual, Susanoo erupted in rage. He destroyed rice fields, tore down sacred spaces, and finally threw a skinned horse into Amaterasu’s weaving hall, killing one of her maidens. Traumatized, Amaterasu hid inside a rocky cave, sealing the entrance. With the Sun Goddess gone, darkness covered the world. Crops failed, evil spirits grew stronger, and the heavenly realm became silent. The kami gathered to bring back the sun. They decorated a sacred tree with jewels, placed a mirror at the entrance, and asked Uzume to perform a joyful, comedic dance. Her performance made the gods roar with laughter. After she returned she banished Susanoo to earth. Banished to Earth, Susanoo encountered a family whose daughters were devoured by the eight-headed serpent Orochi. He slayed the serpent and discovered a celestial sword within its tail, which he offered to Amaterasu as a gesture of reconciliation.
