Vocabulary: the center of the Earth
core
Vocabulary: happens when Earth's crust shakes
earthquake
Vocabulary: different shapes on Earth
landforms
Vocabulary: water that is not salty
fresh water
Vocabulary: when a lot of rain falls quickly
flood
Oceans cover about how much of Earth?
three-fourths of Earth
Name a way Earth can change quickly.
(Any of the following: earthquake, volcano, landslide, flood)
This is an area of land that is flat and wide and can cover many miles
plain
What are three places where we can find fresh water?
(i.e. streams, lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.)
Describe what happens during a landslide.
A landslide happens when the rocks and soil slide from higher to lower ground.
What shape is a globe?
a sphere
Name a way Earth can change slowly.
(Any of the following: wind, water, ice)
What is a landform that usually lies between mountains or hills?
valley
How is an ocean different from a pond?
An ocean is a body of salt water. It is deep and flows. A pond is a small body of fresh water and it does not flow.
How does wind change the Earth slowly?
Strong winds blow sand and carry away soil. The surface of the land or rock changes shape.
How are hills different from mountains?
Hills are not as high as mountains.
What is an opening in Earth's crust?
a volcano
List the three layers of Earth and describe each one.
Crust: thinnest, hardest layer, the one we live on
Mantle: below the crust, very hot
Core: part liquid, part solid, hottest part of Earth
People use oceans to carry people and goods around the world on ships (also to play, swim, food, etc)
How can a volcano change Earth's land?
A volcano is an opening in Earth's crust. It can erupt and very hot, thick liquid will come out of the opening. The liquid cools and turns into solid rock. It can make new mountains or make mountains bigger.
Name a reason why water is important.
Explain how ice can change Earth's surface.
1. Water turns to ice in cold weather. Ice takes up space in cracks of rocks and pushes cracks apart.
2. Water melts in warmer weather. Water runs out and the crack is bigger.
3. Rocks with large cracks break apart.
Name the 7 continents on Earth
Australia, Antarctica, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa
What is the purpose of a dam?
to supply fresh water to a city or town
Give a specific example of how you have seen Earth's land change.
(ex: the rocks in the rivers feel smooth, the soil moved after rain, saw land and trees in the road after a storm, etc)
