A book that takes place in a country ruled by an evil old man. This book is about the old man's young clone, Matt. Matt, though, is not evil. In his society, clones are looked down on and all of the old man's family hates him, all except Maria, who loves him. Matt struggles to understand the purpose of his existence until he is told by the old man himself that he is simply there for spare parts. So, Matt makes a run for it. Eventually the old man dies without Matt and he finds himself ruler of an empire built on cruelty, evil and greed. Main ideas of the book include What truly defines our humanity, the ethics of scientific discovery, the question of whether humans are naturally altruistic, and the role of literature as persuasion.
