A description of someone cowardly.

Yellow Bellied

The term 'yellow belly' to describe someone who is acting cowardly comes from US slang. According the Oxford English Dictionary the first recorded use of the term comes from a study of gangs in Chicago written by F.M. Thrasher in 1927. The specific origin of the phrase, and indeed the association of the colour yellow with cowardice in particular, is unknown but the colour yellow was associated with treachery in medieval times and it is possible the meaning shifted from describing someone who was a traitor to someone who was a coward.
