How a tornado forms

Inside thunderclouds, warm, humid air rises, while cool air falls--along with rain or hail. These conditions can cause spinning air currents inside the cloud. Although the spinning currents start out horizontal, they can turn vertical and drop down from the cloud--becoming a tornado.

How the sun affects the weather

The Sun affects our weather through the day/night cycle and the different seasons. This is because of the rotation and orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The Sun heats up our environment changing the temperature and the types of precipitation we will receive.

White, puffy clouds that look like piles of cotton; they are known as fair-weather clouds.

How a hurricane forms

All tropical cyclones, including hurricanes, develop in the same way. The ocean needs to be at least 26.5 degrees Celsius for a hurricane to form. When wind blows across the warm ocean water, the warm, moist air rapidly rises. As it rises, the moist air cools and the water in it condenses into large storm clouds.

Thin, feathery clouds that appear high in the sky; they are a sign that rain or snow is on the way.

How a blizzard forms

Generally, blizzards form when cold polar air meets warm, moist air from lower latitudes. 2. Moisture is needed to form clouds and precipitation: There has to be enough air blowing across a body of water, like a large lake or the ocean, to blow up water vapor.

How the sun affects the water cycle

The Sun heats up large bodies of water which causes the water to evaporate and become water vapour. The vapour becomes droplets of water that join with other droplets to form clouds. The clouds release water back on to the Earth’s surface. The cycle continues this way.

How to stay safe in a tornado

  1. Go to the basement or take shelter in a small interior ground floor room such as a bathroom, closet or hallway.
  2. If you have no basement, protect yourself by taking shelter under a heavy table or desk.
  3. In all cases, stay away from windows, outside walls and doors.

How to stay safe in a blizzard

  1. Cozy up in a safe space and wait out the storm.
  2. If you have to go outside, make sure you can find your way home.
  3. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
  4. Stay off the roads.
  5. If you have to go outside, avoid overexerting yourself.

Explain high and low air pressure

Low pressure: means the air on the Earth’s surface is warm and moist. This usually brings stormy weather with strong winds.

High pressure: happens when there is dry, cool air blowing on the Earth’s surface. This usually brings sunny skies and nice dry weather.
