WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?
CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS
STATIC ELECTRICITY
WHERE DOES ELECTRICITY COME FROM?
RENEWABLE ELECTRICAL ENERGY
100
An atom is made up of...
electrons
100
What is an insulator?
An insulator is an object that does not allow electricity to travel through it.
100
What is a proton?
A proton is a positively charged part of an atom.
100
List 5 renewable energy sources and explain why each is considered to be renewable.
Wind- a natural source Water- never runs out Tidal- tide is always flowing to create electricity Solar- does not use any fossil fuels to burn Geothermal-does not create pollution
100
Name three ways to generate renewable electrical energy.
solar power, wind power, water power
200
Describe the engery transformations that occur in a television.
electrical energy is tranformed into light energy so that you can see the picture, sound energy so that you can hear the program and heat
200
What is a conductor?
A conductor is an object that allows electricity to pass through it.
200
What is an electron?
An electron is a negatively charged part of an atom.
200
What are 4 forms of energy that electricity can be formed into?
light, heat, motion, and sound
200
How is your computer connected to a river?
The river flows into a dam which stops the water from moving. The dam directs the water through large pipes to large wheels called turbines. Electricity is produced when the turbines spin. The electricity travels through transmission lines to a substation and then to distribution lines. These lines go to your house and school= to your computer.
300
Static electricity occurs when... Give an example.
There is a buildup of electric charges on an object. Example- socks that are stuck together, lighting, etc.
300
What are the elements of a complete circuit?
A complete circuit has 3 parts: a source of electricity (battery), a pathway (wires), and an electrical device (a light, a motor, etc.).
300
If an atom has the same number of electrons and protons, what type of electrical charge does it have?
a neutral charge
300
How are fossil fuels like natural gas, oil and coal used to generate electricity?
The fossils fuels are burned to heat water which boils and creates steam. The steam rises and turns turbines which generate electricity.
300
What is the main problem with using solar power to generate electricity?
The sun does not shine all day and thus, power must be stored in batteries when the sun is not shining. Also, solar panels are expensive.
400
What is the difference between series circuits and parallel circuits? Draw both circuits on the board.
A series circuit is a type of circuit in which current has only one pathway to travel through. A parallel circuit is a type of circuit in which current can travel through more than one pathway
400
Name three objects that conduct electricity.
penny, quater, wire, popcan, spoon, fork, knife
400
When objects have different charges, do they attract or repel each other?
Objects with opposite charges attract one another and objects with the same charge repel each other.
400
Describe two problems with burning fossil fuels to generate electricity.
air pollution, acid rain, carbon dioxide from the burning process contributes to the greenhouse effect
400
Define renewable and non-renewable resources. Give an example of each.
Renewable- something that is constantly being replaced and is always there to use= water. Non-renewable- something that once used up cannot be replaced= coal
500
Why does a light go one when you flip a light switch to the on position?
When the switch is in the on position, there is no gap in the circuit so that the electricity can travel in a complete circuit. When the switch is in the off position, there is a gap in the circuit that prevents the electricity from travelling in a complete circuit.
500
Name three insulators.
wood, rubber, most plastics,
500
Why does your hair stand on end when you rub a ballon it it?
The atoms in your have lost electrons to the ballon through the rubbing and now your strands of hair have positive charges so they repel each other.
500
How is oil made? Is it a renewable energy source for producing electricity? Explain.
Dead plants and animals in the oceans fell to the bottom of the ocean and were then compressed for millions of years and turned into oil. Oil is a not a renewable enery soure because it would take too long for more to be made naturally.
500
How can you be a sustainable person? Give at least 3 examples.
Carpool, ride your bike to school, walk to school, take the bus, turn off your lights when you don't need them, etc.
