100
If 1 joule is the energy need to lift a 1 kg object 1 meter into the air, how much energy is needed to lift 4kg 3m?
12 joules
100
What is an energy conversion?
When one type of energy changes into another
100
What does the word sustainable mean?
to be maintained at a certain rate or level.
100
What does renewable energy means?
Energy that can be used again and again.
200
How can you find which electronic devices (like a fan, hairdryer or toaster) will use the most electricity?
Look on the appliances to see how much energy they use.
200
What are 2 examples of radiant energy?
1. a fire 2. the sun
200
how does sustainability impact the earth?
It impacts the Earth because environment, economy and society need to be in balance for the Earth to sustained (Keep going).
200
Explain what geothermal energy is.
Energy that comes from inside the Earth
300
What do watts measure?
How much energy is used in electrical devices
300
Give two examples of sound energy.
(Answers can vary)
300
How does mechanical energy affect our daily lives?
We need mechanical energy to do any kind of movement, including kinetic energy and potential energy
300
What are 3 examples of something people do to support sustainability?
Answers can vary (plant a tree, recycle, take public transportation)
300
What is potential energy and kinetic energy and give an example of how they might be connected
potential energy is the stored energy something has. Kinetic energy is energy that is in motion. An example: A ball sitting on top of a hill (potential energy). The ball rolling down the hill (kinetic energy)
400
When should a person eat high calorie foods?
When they are needing more energy for something like physical activity or intense training.
400
Name an energy conversion that might happen with a lamp
Electrical to radiant
400
How does Hydroelectric energy work?
The water goes to the turbine and makes it move and with the turbines moving, the generator starts moving and produces energy.
400
Is coal a sustainable energy source for the Czech Republic?
sustainability means we look at energy sources that are good for the economy (not too expensive), good for society (safe for people) and good for the environment (little pollution). Coal is not a very expensive option compared to other energy sources. Coal mining provides jobs for many people. However, it is a dangerous industry and injuries and even deaths of coal miners can occur. Burning coal releases many types of air pollution that can harm animals, plants and the natural environment. CO2 is released which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. It is a fossil fuel so it is a non-renewable resource so eventually it will run out and we will have to look for replacements.
400
What is biomass energy?
Organic materials that can be burned and used as a source of fuel (wood burning)
500
What do the units (j), (kj) and (w) stand for and what is an example of something they each might measure?
j = joules (physical energy used to lift something) kj = kilojoules (the energy stored in food) w = watts (how much energy is in electrical devices)
500
Name at least 2 energy conversions that occur in a television.
Mechanical to electrical electrical to radiant radiant to sound
500
What are the 7 types of energy and give an example of each (Mrs. Chen)
Mechanical, Radiant, Sound, Chemical, Heat, Electrical, Nuclear Examples of each answers will vary
500
How are fossil fuels formed? Give three examples.
Fossil fuels are made from the remains of ancient dead living things. The remains must be in an anaerobic environment (no oxygen) and exposed to very high pressure and temperature. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form and need to be mined or dug up from underground. When they are burned, CO2 is released. Three examples are oil, gas, and coal.

explain how a generator works to generate electricity
Generators provide us with the energy to power our homes, schools and businesses. A generator has a spinning turbine that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. The turbine is attached to a coil of wire. When coil of wire spins around a magnet, electrons flows and this electron flow is electricity. The electricity can then be used to power our electrical appliances. There are many ways to make a turbine spin. Often, water is heated to produce steam that will have enough force to turn the turbine. This water can be heated in many ways using renewable or non-renewable energy sources
