A histogram represents the frequency of variables. A bar graph uses exact variables. Histograms present numerical data whereas bar graphs show categorical data.

Explain how heat transfer/introducing heat affects the volume of a liquid. Give an example.

Heat causes the liquid particles to bounce off of each other faster and faster, until the volume increases. An example would be a boiling pot of water. If the water continues to boil, the water particles will continue bouncing off one another faster and faster until the pot overflows.

What is the difference between a laceration and a fracture?

If more pressure is put on a bone than it can withstand, it will either split or break. A break of any size is called a fracture. 

A cut is a break or opening in the skin. It is also called a laceration. A cut may be deep, smooth, or jagged. A cut can also be near the surface of the skin, or deeper. The deeper the cut or laceration is, the more likely it is to affect tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, or a bone.

Who were the Coureurs de Bois?

The Coureurs de Bois were young French men who began to travel deep into eastern Canada to get furs. Coureurs de Bois is a French term that means “runners of the woods.” These men were unlicensed, which means they did not have permission to transport goods (like furs) to the trading posts. The Coureurs de Bois became good friends with the First Nations and learned a lot about Canadian land. Coureurs de Bois learned to trap beavers themselves, which increased the supply of beaver pelts.

Once it became known that gold was present, miners stormed the area trying to capitalize on the opportunity. These people were known as "stampeders". This mass migration is referred to as the Klondike Gold Rush. These people were disappointed because of the cold conditions they endured for such little gain.

A social system is one that occurs through interactions with people. The structures within these systems are based on community members. A social structure can also be man-made (e.g., schools or places of worship), or natural, (e.g., bird or ant colonies).

What is Confederation and what were the reasons people argued Confederation was needed?

Confederation is the creation of Canada that occurred in 1867. It was a federal union in which the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada joined together to form the Dominion of Canada. 

Reasons it was needed:

-to defend against the threat of American invasion

What is desalination and how does the process work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this method?

Desalination is the process of removing salt particles and bacteria from ocean water so it can be purified safely. Wells are used to extract the ocean water and pump it to a facility where reverse osmosis is used to extract unwanted particles that get dispensed back into the ocean. 

Advantages: Safe drinking water from the largest source of water.

Disadvantages: Time consuming, expensive process that destroys natural ecosystems with removed bacteria and salt.
