Persecution, debate about what traditions & cultural practices were acceptable such as whether food sacrifices to idols could be eaten by Christians, some argued with each other over which of the apostles they should follow, some calling themselves followers of St Paul, and some followers of other teachers. Gifts of the Holy Spirit - some debated which gifts of the Holy Spirit such as the ability to speak in tongues (communicate in different languages) were most important. Beliefs - some argued with each other about life after death, with some denying the belief in the resurrection of the body.

Lambs were used in animal sacrifice in ancient Judaism. To many, lambs symbolise innocence, purity and peace. Describing Jesus as the Lamb of Go reflects that he was a perfect and pure sacrifice.

What was the role of the High Priest in the Temple?

The High Priest was the chief of all the priests in the Temple and was a man taken from the descendants of Aaron (Moses' brother, and the first High Priest). The High Priest had the role of interceding between humans and God.

What does John the Baptist say to identify Jesus as the Messiah?

Give two examples of how Jesus showed forgiveness.

In Luke 23:34, Jesus showed the value and importance of forgiveness by willingly being the sacrifice for human sin and forgiving those who executed him. Jesus showed that forgiveness should be offered even if others disagree, such as his forgiveness of Zacchaeus (a wealthy tax collector) in Luke 19:1-10 and the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11.

What is the Church Penitent?

Those Christians who are in purgatory are known as the Church being purified, or the Church Penitent. A Penitent is a person who is humble and regrets their sins. Catholics do not believe that those in purgatory are bad people; they are ordinary people who committed sins in the course of their lives. For Catholics, purgatory is a loving opportunity to be cleansed.

What does Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice mean?

Jesus made the ultimate and final sacrifice that brought about eternal redemption. This suggests that he replaces the Atonement rite in the Temple bringing God's holiness to all people.
