The scale of a map shows the relationship between the size of an object in real life and its size drawn on a map. A word map in your atlas might have a scale of something like 1:17500000. This map shows a small amount of detail for a large area. These generally show physical, political and economic information. A map used for something like your house would want to show many details. It would have a scale of 1:500 approx. This type of map shows more detailed features like residential planning and military operations.
