Define the term Apprenticeship System

The Apprenticeship system was a temporary setup that followed emancipation. It required freed individuals to work for their former owners for a few years without pay, in exchange for training and a chance to adjust to their new lives. However, it often led to unfair treatment, and it was ended in 1838, when all former slaves became completely free.
