McDonald’s debuted ______________ in select markets in 1981. They were inspired by owner Ray Kroc’s determination to develop a new menu item that appealed to the American desire for a convenient alternative to red meat. McDonald’s Chairman Fred Turner zeroed in on what that product should be: “a boneless piece of chicken,” sold “almost like French fries.”

McDonald’s hired chef Rene Arend, who had cooked for Queen Elizabeth II of England, to create it. Arend produced a ___________ in sauce that was well received in the main corporate office, but could not be reproduced on the massive scale needed by McDonald’s franchises.

Why were they originally created?

They were originally invented as a way to keep moisture in soil for plants.

The plant roots can take the water out of the _______ as soon as the soil gets dry, and then the ______ absorb more water again once they're watered.

So the plants are always the perfect level of damp.

They are several molecules joined together and they grow when the water is absorbed in the spaces between the molecules. Apparently, they were invented way back in the '60s to irrigate crops during droughts.

What are they used for today?

They're hugely popular with children and YouTube content creators.

Many videos have been created showing people filling paddling pools and baths with the colorful _______.

They are even used as spa material.
