All citizens were expected to participate in the Assembly, which made laws and voted on important decisions for Athens.
The Assembly met outdoors at a hill called the Pnyx and often included thousands of people.
Citizens would have the opportunity to give speeches to the crowd, and the Assembly could debate its current issues and concerns.
The Assembly would vote, usually by raising their hands, to make all final decisions.
A smaller group of citizens called the Council would set the agenda for each Assembly meeting to maintain focus and organization among a large group of people.
Citizens also served on juries to hear evidence and give judgment on court cases, which usually included about 500 people.
