The legend of the beginning of the Trojan War. The gods were celebrating the marriage of Peleus and Thetis (eventually parents of Achilles). Eris had not been invited because (since she was the goddess of discord) she had a tendency to stir up trouble. Eris tossed a golden apple into the party; it is inscribed "for the fairest one." Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena all claim it.
Zeus asks Paris of Troy to decide which goddess is the fairest. Hera offers him supreme power; Athena offers him wisdom, fame, and glory in battle. Aphrodite offers him Helen of Troy, supposedly the most beautiful mortal woman in the world—and as the goddess of desire, she causes Paris to become obsessed with Helen at first site. Paris awards the apple to Aphrodite, and Paris claims Helen (even though she is married to King Menelaus of Sparta).
The Greeks, in turn, begin to battle the Trojans.
