Who popularized the story of the hummingbird in a burning forest? (Remember Ryan Martell told us this story!)
Wangari Maathai
Give three companies that are considered to be part of Big Oil
Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP Oil
A. 3.5%
B. 2.5%
C. 4%
D. 1%
B. 2.5%
What does UNEP stand for?
United Nations Environment Programme
“I have learned you are never too small to make a difference.”
Greta Thunberg
How does eco-anxiety manifest itself and give one way to cope with it.
Manifests: nervousness, anxiety, sleeping problems, disturbances, not wanting to have children, pessimism, disillusionment, panic, guilt, overwhelming thoughts
Coping: acknowledge and explore emotions, reminding yourself to start by making small differences, take a media/technology break, talk and connect with others, meditation
In the process of generating nuclear power, a single neutron is fired at an atom of what?
Uranium-235
What is #13 on the sustainable development goals?
Climate action
"It's not a big deal if the sea level rises five or ten metres. People will just sell their homes and move”.
Ben Shapiro
Define climate/eco-anxiety.
Climate anxiety, or eco-anxiety, is distress related to worries about the effects of climate change.
Give a limitation of hydrogen powered planes
Extraction Cost: As hydrogen is mostly present in water and does not exist on its own, it has to be extracted via costly and energy intensive methods like electrolysis.
Raw Material Cost: Metals like platinum used as catalysts are rare and expensive to purchase.
Storage: As hydrogen is a gas at room temperature, it has to be cooled significantly to change it to a liquid for enough of it to be stored in a fuel tank. Accordingly, this presents logistical issues.
Flammability: Being highly flammable, hydrogen has to be handled very carefully which may give rise to safety concerns.
Who is this?
Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda currently serves as Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth & Job Creation. He is assigned portfolio responsibilities for Water, Environment, Climate Change, and the Blue & Green Economies.
Who is this?
Sir David Attenborough
Which country was the biggest producer of oil in 2023
USA with 13.0 million barrels per day
Give an advantage of nuclear power
•Nuclear power is far cleaner than the use of fossil fuels, as the process of nuclear fission produces no greenhouse gas emissions. The United States alone was able to avoid 471 million metric tons of carbon emissions by employing nuclear energy. This is the equivalent of removing 100 million cars from the road.
•Nuclear power more reliable than many renewable sources. It produces a constant output of electricity, as opposed to renewable sources such as solar and wind which can only produce energy under select environmental conditions.
What is #13 on the sustainable development goals?
Climate action
“Our people are watching, and our people are taking note. Are we really going to leave... without the commitment to ambition that is sorely needed to save lives and to save our planet? Or are we so blinded and hardened that we can no longer appreciate the cries of humanity?"
Mia Mottley!!!!!!!
Name three popular climate misinformation theories
Global warming is natural and has been occurring for many millennia, we shouldn't bother because the main contributors aren't doing anything so it is futile, climate change doesn't exist it's still cold, 97/100 is inaccurate, etc.
Explain briefly how hydrogen powers planes.
Fuel cells are used to power turboprop engines. They work similarly to a battery. There are two oppositely charged rods: the negatively charged one being the anode and the positively charged one being the cathode. Hydrogen atoms enter at the anode and a catalyst such as platinum oxides the hydrogen(basically it splits it into an electron(-) and proton(+)) The proton passes through a proton exchange membrane between the anode and cathode over to the cathode directly; however, the electrons are unable to pass through the membrane so they accumulate at the anode. This accumulation of negatively charged electrons at the anode and corresponding accumulation of positive charges at the cathode, generates a strong charge difference.
Which greenhouse gas is the biggest contributor to the greenhouse effect? Or, what is the most abundant greenhouse gas in the world?
Water vapour
