Meet Dr Meredith Grey, a "dark and twisty," tequila-loving medical resident with serious mommy issues. After a drunken one-night stand, she stumbles to her first day of a prestigious medical residency, and discovers that last night's bedmate is her boss, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)—and he's married. Her new BFF, intern Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), also starts a relationship with her boss, surgeon Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). The team is rounded out by fellow surgical interns George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), their hard-driving boss Dr Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Chief Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr). Attractive staff plus no social life equals a (kind of hilarious, tbh) syphilis outbreak.

Izzie falls for a patient, Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who tragically dies after proposing to her. Derek's wife, Addison (Kate Walsh), joins the Seattle Grace staff, as does plastic surgeon Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), who was Derek's best friend until he had an affair with Addison. These jokesters! Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) also hops on board, despite not having ever been in a relationship with Derek. Because there is no such thing as too much drama in Shondaland, Cristina gets pregnant, Bailey has a baby while her husband has brain surgery, Burke is shot and loses the use of his hand, and Meredith has to hold a grenade inside a patient before watching her bomb-squad savior (Friday Night Lights' Coach Taylor/Kyle Chandler!) die in front of her. Then she has to put down her dog. Have a heart, Shonda.

season 2

Izzie survives her brain tumor, but doesn't last long after Seattle Grace merges with rival hospital Mercy West, creating a surplus of residents. Izzie is fired and also leaves her husband, Alex, because that's how things go on this show. Meredith and Derek get married via Post-It note and then consummate their relationship all over the hospital. Unsurprisingly, she gets pregnant. Richard struggles with alcoholism and Derek takes over as chief. Owen's army buddy, Teddy (Kim Raver), is hired, and Cristina dumps Owen. A patient's vengeful husband goes on a rampage, kills many residents, and shoots Alex and Derek while Meredith watches. Derek survives, but the stress causes Meredith to lose their baby.

season 6

Cristina quits, then comes back and marries Owen. Arizona goes to Africa to save lives and Callie has a sad revenge fling with Mark Sloan, which is a mistake because she gets pregnant. (For some reason, these doctors don't seem to understand birth control.) Arizona and Callie reunite, but because no one can be happy on this show, they get involved in a catastrophic car accident. When Callie wakes from her coma, she proposes to Arizona. Teddy falls in love with her patient, Henry (Scott Foley), and Meredith and Derek break up (again!) after Meredith tampers with his Alzheimer's clinical trial to help Richard's wife. Mark realizes he loves Lexie, but she dumps him when she finds out Callie is pregnant. She recovers in the arms of fellow resident Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), of the uber-wealthy Harper Avery Foundation.

Season 7

Dark days continue: April and Jackson's baby dies. April grieves by going on military leave, leaving Jackson alone. Callie and Arizona divorce; then Arizona discovers that her new mentor, played by Geena Davis(!!), has an inoperable brain tumor. Richard marries Jackson's mom (Debbie Allen), and Maggie Pierce gets to know Meredith, while Derek's sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) takes over as neurosurgeon. Then Derek realizes he can't live without Meredith and his kids, and moves back to Seattle. But because no one is allowed to be happy, Derek immediately dies. McDreamy, no! Meredith disappears without a trace to raise their two children, plus a surprise third one.
