Name one suggestion you could give to a student who received a low score on the readiness quiz.
Meet with their academic advisor. Meet with the course coordinator.

You notice a student looking at another student’s paper during an exam. What should you do?
Quietly move one of the students.
100
Suppose you know well in advance that you won’t be able to make it to a particular class. What should you do?
Find a substitute.
100
What is the easiest way to send e-mails to your students?
Through ANGEL

When is the first day of classes for the spring 2012 semester?
Monday, January 9th.
200
I was placed into this class (MATH 21), but I already had algebra in high school. Can’t I skip this course?
FTCAP placement is generally accurate. However, you can suggest that the student speaks with their academic advisor.
200
What should you do if a student arrives late to an exam?
You can give them the option to take it then with whatever time remains or they may take the make-up exam with a point penalty.
200
Suppose you get sick suddenly and won’t be able to make it to class. What should you do?
Try to find a substitute, if possible. If you can’t, contact the Undergraduate Math Office.
200
How do you obtain a grader?
You will receive an e-mail asking if you want a grader. You will then be directed to a website where you will have to submit your request.
300
When should you plan on being back in State College for pre-semester course meetings?
The Wednesday prior to the semester beginning
300
I have an older edition of the text, do I have to buy a new one?
Although this depends on the text, typically there isn’t much variation from one edition to the next. If this is the case, the student can use the older edition as a reference and look up homework questions (or anything else that might have changed) from the copy that is kept in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library.
300
What should you do if a student arrives to the exam room and is visibly sick or they tell you they’re not feeling well?
You can tell the student that they have the option of taking the make-up exam. Once they start the exam, it’s too late; the score will count.
300
You are not happy with your grader’s work. What should you do?
If the grader is not completing the work on time (within five days) or is not grading adequately, you should first speak to them about the problem. If an improvement is not made, you should contact James Sellers.

What kind of calculator should I buy?
A graphics calculator is useful as a study and learning tool when used appropriately, but it is not essential. No calculators are allowed on quizzes, midterms, or on the final for Math 4, 21, 22, 26, 41, 110, 140, 141, 220 or 230.
400
A student asks if there is a curve in the class. What is your response?
Simple answer: No. Longer answer: After the second exam and before the late-drop deadline the guaranteed grade-line cutoffs for the major grades (A, B, C, D, F) will be provided to facilitate planning for the rest of the semester. (This is not true for MATH 220 and MATH 230).
400
Two students keep chatting during class. What are some techniques you can use to handle this?

104 McAllister

Can I add your class (assuming the class is full)?
It may be possible to sign a student into a section that has reached its full enrollment. However, there are two conditions: [1] There are available seats in the classroom and [2] The instructor agrees to accept students beyond the course enrollment limit. In such a case, the student needs to take a Drop/Add form (available in 104 McAllister Building and the registrar's web page to the instructor of the course. If the instructor is willing to sign the student into the class, then the student can bring the completed Drop/Add form (signed by both the instructor and the student) back to 104 McAllister Building for processing.

Suzie, a student in your class, earned 305 points and writes you a long e-mail stating that she needs a C in your course to graduate and your class is the only one preventing her from graduating. What is your response?
Go with the numbers. If she only *earned* 305 points, you cannot *give* her a C.
500
