Ladder

Most people don't want to walk under a ladder because it's just unsafe. If a ladder is up, chances are someone's standing on it, working, and you don't want to take the chance of something falling on your head. Nor do you want to risk jostling the ladder and knocking someone down.

To keep the ghosts out of their houses, people would place bowls of food outside to make them happy.

Opening this indoors is considered unlucky.

Umbrella

The modern superstition about opening an umbrella indoors most likely stems from the 18th century, when umbrellas were still a relatively new invention. These early iterations were unwieldy and difficult to handle. The frame of the umbrella relied on sharp metal spokes that would spring open at the command of a stiff spring mechanism. They were either tightly closed or sprung into action, often with such force that they could put out an eye. Anyone standing nearby was in danger of smack by umbrella tines.
