Why was Hamlet contemplating suicide?
His father had just died and his mother seemed fine. Everyone seemed fine except for him. He was upset that she had already remarried especially his uncle. He know saw the world as corrupt and the people as bad people and he wasn't sure if he wanted to be in that corrupt world any longer.

Why does Claudius give his speech to the court?
He wants to reassure the people that him marrying the queen so quickly is good for Denmark. Basically he is trying to ease the people so they can't suspect him as the murderer.

The scene is at night, in the dark. "...the air bites shrewdly; it is cold." This is foreshadowing in the next scene that Hamlet will receive some bad news that will bite at him for a while.

They thought that he didn't really love her and would just use her. Also, that he was suppose to marry royalty and she wasn't royalty.
