Object - blackmail his boss for money 

Intention - he wants more money

Circumstances - he wants the money for his daughter's college


Mortal, if the sum of money is large enough. If it's super small though, it could be a venial sin. He has knowledge, he is free, but the amount of money (whether taking it destroys lives) is what would determine if it were venial or mortal.
