My first and probably my most famous poem was "Negro Speaks of Rivers."   I also wrote lyrics for a Broadway musical as well as plays and short stories. I served in the Spanish American War as a War Correspondent. I enjoyed music of the Harlem Renaissance.  My New York City residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

My first name was Edward, but I am better known for my nickname.  My band and I performed at the Cotton Club.  I used the term "black" in many of my songs.  Two of my well-known songs were "Mood Indigo" and "Take the A Train."   On my youtube video I am playing the piano while riding a train.  An orchestra is playing along with me.  You can also see dancers and singers.

I sculpted figurines and animals from clay I found in my neighborhood.  My father did not approve of my fondness of sculpting and art.  I won a prize at the County Fair for "The Most Original Sculpture."  I later sculpted busts of W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey. I also created "The Harp" which was inspired by James Weldon Johnson's poem "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

I was a special location in Harlem.  My nickname was "Home of Happy Feet!"  The infamous Lindy Hoopers danced on my crowded and well used floors. The Lindy Hop was names after Charles Lindburgh, a famous aviator.  The big question at this location was "Can you dance?"  There was a no discrimination policy at this location.  Everyone was welcomed.

I wrote poems and stories.  I was a member of a literary salon alongside other famous of the Harlem Renaissance poets; they were W.E.B. Du Bois, Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes.  My first published book of poetry was called, "Heart of Women and Other Poems."

I grew up in New Orleans.  My nickname is Satchmo.  I play the cornet. Two of my well-known songs are "Star Dust" and "What a Wonderful World."  I was the first African American to receive billing for a major Hollywood film entitled:  "Pennies from Heeaven."

I was raised in Harlem, New York City.  I am best known for my Migration series.  I used vivid colors with black and brown figures.  I was considered the most widely acclaimed African American Artist of the 20th Century. I taught at various American universities.  I even painted a mural for the Harold Washington Center in Chicago, Illinois.

 Saturday night.  It was used to supplement revenue to help pay for housing expenses.  Everything was 25 cents.  There were more social gatherings than there were hours on a Saturday night!  People would dance all night long.  Because apartments were small only one musician playing the piano could be accommodated.

As a painter I employed a wide variety of techniques. I painted traditional landscapes as well as African themed abstracts. I was an educator at Howard University.  "Shapes and Colors," "Men Working" and "Portrait of Pierre " are just a few of my works. During my summers, I visited Martha's Vineyard where I used watercolors and met with other artists.

At this special location many unknown people became stars after their performances.  At first only whites were allowed, but under new ownership everyone was welcome.  Amateur Nights were held.  An unknown singer forgot her lines and began to "scat."  This unknown entertainer was Ella Fitzgerald and grew in popularity.  Many people got their start here.  More recently, artists such as Prince and Michael Jackson performed here.

I was the first generation in my family not to be a slave.  I was a poet and my most famous poem was "God Never Planted a Garden."  I was a voice for change and equality. My poems were published in the NAACP's magazine called, "Crisis."  My husband and I entertained Martin Luther King, Jr. at our home.

She is an American Jazz singer and friends with Ella Fitzgerald.  Her nickname is "Lady Day."  She was one of the first African American women to work with an all-white orchestra.  This singer is also a favorite of Mrs. Hughes.  In her video she sings "I'll be Seeing You" and wears flowers in her hair.

I earned a Fine Arts Degree from Fisk University. I taught at Fisk University and the founded the School's Art Department.  My style was distinctive because I used silhouettes and dark and light shapes. My paintings showed layers of space. I painted African Americans working hard, slavery images, nightclubs and jazz.   My works were often published in NAACP's magazine, "Crisis."

This location began in the 1920's.  It was popular and exclusive.  The audience was white while the performers were African Americans.  The two groups were no allowed to mingle together. The leader of the house band was Duke Ellington.  Famous entertainers like Jimmie Durante, Irving Berlin and Mae West were often seen in the audience.  The performers were well paid and performed 15 times in one week.

My grandmother raised me since my parents abandoned me at birth. In high school I won poetry contests and earned academic honors.  My poetry was published in "Crisis," NAACP's magazine.  "Heritage," "Color," "Caroling Duck "are a few of my poems.  "On These I Stand" was published after my death. A library branch in New York City is named in my honor.

I am famous for singing "Backwater Blues" and the "St. Louis Blues."  I am over 6 feet tall. l I am the first African-American woman to sell over 1 million copies of my songs.  In my youtube video you will recognize me standing at the bar and performing to an audience at a club.

Early in my life I loved sculpting.  As the years progressed, I found it difficult to have a career as an African American woman.  I did receive a gold medal for my work.  My works are on display at the Danforth Art Museum. W.E.B. Du Bois was a friend of mine.  "Water Boy" and "Ethiopian Awakening" are two examples of my sculptures that are often lent to other museums.  My grandchildren are just realizing now how my sculptures were an important addition to the Harlem Renaissance.

This location was the home of bebop.  Bebop was a  a faster type of jazz and took America by storm.  Charlie Parker was the leader of the house band.  Many great jazz musicians and singers played there.  Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis were a few of its entertainers. This location was destroyed by fire in 1974 but was later rebuilt; live jazz is still performed there today.
