Harry sees Barty Crouch in Snape's office while coming back from the prefect's bathroom in the middle of the night, and being his usual curious self, decides to see what was going on. He doesn't pay attention to where he was going, and accidentally steps onto the trick stair on the staircase, causing him to drop his golden egg, which opens and wails loudly. Filch comes, expecting that it was Peeves who was making a racket, but finds the golden egg lying on the floor instead (meanwhile, Harry was hidden under the Invisibility Cloak). While Filch was trying to blindly reach around for whoever dropped the egg, Snape arrives, preventing Filch from reaching the invisible Harry. Snape had discovered that someone had broken into his office, and asks Filch to help him catch the intruder. Then Mad Eye Moody imposter/Barty Crouch Jr. arrives at the scene. His magical eye sees Harry frozen in a corner, and so he manages to convince Filch and Snape to go back to bed, letting Harry manage to gather his stuff and go back to the Gryffindor common room

She loves to get the greatest scoop for major wizarding newspapers by releasing private stories to the public and making them sound as foul as possible. Using her Animagus trick, she found out that Hagrid was actually a half-giant, that Viktor Krum asked Hermione to come to visit him in Bulgaria in the summer, and that Harry was "disturbed and dangerous" because his scar had hurt and was screaming in pain. These were all published in major newspapers of the wizarding world. At the end of the book, however, Hermione realizes how Rita Skeeter managed to listen in on private conversations, and captures her Animagus form in a jar, forcing her to stop writing terrible stories about Harry.

Barty Crouch Jr. was the son of Barty Crouch Sr., who worked for the ministry of magic. Barty Crouch Jr. was accused of torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom with the Cruciatus Curse, along with Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange. They were all sent to Azkaban, but Barty Crouch Jr.'s mother convinced her husband (Barty Crouch Sr.) to bring home their son. And so Barty Crouch Sr. and his wife paid a visit to their son in Azkaban. But they had also brought along some Polyjuice Potion in preparation, taking their son's hairs and turning Mrs. Crouch's appearance into Barty Crouch Jr., and turning Barty Crouch Jr. into Mrs. Crouch. The real Mrs. Crouch then took the place of her son's place in Azkaban, letting her husband and son (who looked like Mrs. Crouch because of the Polyjuice Potion) leave the prison. But Barty Crouch Sr. knew that he had to control his son in some way so that he won't try to seek his master (Voldemort). He decided to use the Imperius Curse on his own son to control him, and made him wear an Invisibility Cloak at all times.
