What is a transient ischemic attack (TIA)? 

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) — sometimes called a “mini-stroke” — is like a stroke, but the effects are temporary. These are often warning signs that a person has a very high risk of having a true stroke soon. A person who has a TIA needs emergency medical care as soon as possible.

What is/are considerations with OTC Cold and Cough Medication? (e.g. dayquil/niquil)?

  • Dayquil is taken during the day, can keep some people awake, but it can also have side effects of nervousness, dizziness, or sleepiness

  • Nyquil should be taken at night as it makes you sleepy about 30 minutes after taking. Never take nyquil and then do things where you need to be alert such as using machinery or going somewhere it may be dangerous to fall asleep. Can tell by color! Orange/red during day blue/purple night

  • These often include multiple ingredients like acetametaphine (like Tylenol) as well as a decongestant (help w/ stuffy nose) and cough suppressent

  • “Take medications only as directed. Some cold remedies contain multiple ingredients, such as a decongestant plus a pain reliever, so read the labels of cold medications you take to make sure you're not taking too much of any medication”

What are the warning signs of a stroke? 

  • Balance. Watch for a sudden loss of balance.
  • Eyes. Look out for sudden vision loss or changes in one or both eyes.
  • Face. Smile. Look for a droop on one or both sides of the face.
  • Arms. Raise both arms. If you or someone is having a stroke, one arm will sag or drop in a way that it usually doesn’t.
  • Speech. You or someone might slur your or their speech or have trouble choosing the right words.
  • Time. Time is critical — call for help immediately. If possible, look at your watch, phone or a clock to track when symptoms start. Telling a healthcare provider when symptoms began can help them know which treatment options are best.
