If you are a morning shuttle person, you spend the morning with the campers in the cafeteria and meet with your JC in the afternoon before driving home in the van. If you are an afternoon shuttle person, you meet with your JC in the morning, between 8:30 and 8:50.

When there is a safety concern in the classroom or a camper needs a space to think or cool down.

Make sure all campers are getting on the shuttle and get parent signatures. If a camper isn't there, call a parent. If they don't answer, leave and let a director know.

Call the parent or family member to set up a good time and place to meet; find a buddy to go with you if necessary; read the camper's whole application; have questions prepared or bring a standard form from PBHA; know whether the camper has an IEP

What is your most powerful tool for handling camper behavior?

Use specific, constant praise in your classroom and around the camp in general. Pointing out the positive will help you avoid a lot of problems in the first place!

Or: Always be sure to give specific instructions and explain expectations for every activity. Often behavior problems arise from misunderstandings or lack of information.

What do you do if you need to bring lunch on a field trip?

Check in with a director before the day of the field trip. Pick up the cooler from the cafeteria before you leave and make sure to fill out the form.

What's the appropriate response to a camper getting hurt?

First, take care of the camper's needs. Then, contact a director as soon as possible. If the injury is severe, we may need to file a report, but we keep track of injuries internally regardless of severity.

Come prepared with information and questions; be aware of possible language barriers; really listen to what the parent is saying and respond to their comments/concerns; be honest and open; meet in a space where the family member is most comfortable

How does NAYEP handle recurring or serious behavior issues?

NAYEP will hold a circle with the people involved to discuss the problem and develop a plan to move forward. Directors, camper(s), family member(s), counselor(s), and PBHA staff may be invited to the meeting, depending on the nature of the problem.
