This movie takes place in an artsy (and drugs-y) Manhattan. Young Syd is treated as an intern at her job for a magazine and tries to impress her colleagues by getting her neighbor (a famous photographer that fell of the map years ago) Lucy to do submit her work for the magazine.

Then, the lines begin to blur between their professional relationship, which then becomes sexual. There’s also heroin that blurs the lines. It’s an artsy movie about seduction and it’s great!

This artist is definitely the oldest famous lesbian singer on this list. Her career started in the late 1980s, playing pop-based folk-rock in lesbian bars in LA. Naturally, because of this, there were rumors about her sexuality from the start. So in 1993, she decided to come out. Back then there was still so much taboo around homosexuality, but she stood her ground and also became a big LGBTQ+ activist in the following years.

In 2011, she got a well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. By being so open about her sexuality from very early on in her career, she definitely paved the way for a lot of gay female singers today.

What is Canada's only gay day called?

What is ... Pink Triangle Day.

The pink triangle is also used to symbolize a major advance in the gay rights moment:  In the late 1970s, three gay activists were charged with indecency for an article that appeared in the Toronto-based magazine The Body Politic. A precursor to DailyXtra—which is still published online today—The Body Politic was a monthly journal that became a major catalyst for gay liberation in Canada and an influential voice worldwide.

On February 14, 1979, The Body Politic’s publishers were acquitted of all charges in a court ruling widely considered to be the first major legal victory for the Canadian queer movement. Pink Triangle Day was proclaimed later that year by the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Rights Coalition to celebrate the victory.

The date of the court ruling—Valentine’s Day—was fortuitous and presented the Coalition with an opportunity for further resistance against societal oppression and heteronormativity.
