Proclaims a challenge, prediction or warning.
What is The Herald
This is the god that most often smites Odysseus and his crew.
Who is Zeus?
Who is the shadow in the "The Tale of Three Brothers."
Who is Death?
Hero encounters, a chain of obstacles that test their strength and intellect in preparation for the final battle with the shadow figure.
What are Tests, Enemies, Allies, Challenges and Temptations?
The Hero comes back to the ordinary world changed.
What is The Return?
Maybe willing or unwilling initially, but at the key moment they must sacrifice their own desires, for the greater good.
What is The Hero
This is the setting to Part 1 of The Odessey.
The narrator is speaking to the muse for inspiration to tell the tale of Odysseus following the 10 year period of the Trojan war as he begins stranded on Ogygia.

What is going back in time?
The hero crosses over this "boundary" several times on their journey
What is a THRESHOLD?
Having stolen the boone from the gods, the hero is pursued to the ends of the Earth, or having had a boone willingly bestowed by god hero, is ushered home under their guardianship
What is The Road Back?
Blocks the path of the hero. Sometimes a henchman of the primary antagonist defeated, and sent off to warn the villain of the coming hero
What is the Threshold Guardian?
This step in the HJ is when Odysseus does not want to leave his family and sail to Troy; he knows it will be a long trip.
What is The Refusal?
This is the Herald in Spiderman, Hercules, or the Hunger Games.
Who is Uncle Ben, Hermes, or Effie?
Where the hero returns to as part of or after the WRAP-UP
What is THE ORDINARY WORLD?
The Hero prepares to face their greatest challenge/feat/fear.
What is the Approach?
Often a comic companion to the hero, but usually has their own agenda. Often disrupts the plan of heroes and villains alike.
What is the Trickster?
While Odysseus’ men want to steal the Cyclops’ cheeses and animals and depart immediately, this is what Odysseus wishes.
What is "to see what else the cyclops has to offer."
This is the Mentor and the Shadow in "The Sound of Thunder."
Who is Travis?
Hero must confront the shadow with a sacrifice. Death of the ego.
What is the Ordeal?
The hero must overcome or reconcile with their faults. May also be considered making up for wrongdoings.
What is the Atonement?
A mysterious character, whose alliances cannot be determined, or whose appearance hides an unknown identity.
What is the Shapeshifter?
This step in the HJ is when Odysseus nearly makes it home the first time, but his crew opens a bag, given to him by Aeolus, god of the winds When the bag is opened, it releases a wind that blows them far away from Ithaca.
What is The Approach?
This is the Call to Adventure in "The Tale of Three Brothers."
