Must go BOTH WAYS.

If an individual has high energy levels (physical health and wellbeing), they are more likely to invest time into developing relationships with their friends (social health and wellbeing). If their interactions and communication with others are positive (social), they may be more likely to play sport with these friends and develop their fitness levels (physical).

What is the difference between mental and emotional health and wellbeing.

Emotional health and wellbeing relates to appropriately experiencing, identifying and managing emotions, whereas mental health and wellbeing relates to the nature of feelings and thoughts that a person is having. Good emotional health and wellbeing does not mean that emotions and feelings are always positive. In fact, experiencing only positive emotions and feelings can indicate that emotional health and wellbeing is not optimal. As humans, we all experience negative events which can, and should, cause us to experience negative emotions and feelings. During these times, mental health and wellbeing may not be optimal, but if the emotions and feelings experienced are appropriate for the given situation, emotional health and wellbeing can be considered positive.

Experiencing stress is an aspect of mental health and wellbeing, but the manner in which the individual recognises and deals with the associated emotions relates to emotional health and wellbeing. The loss of a loved one is an event that often causes mental health and wellbeing to be impacted in a negative way. The person may feel sad and experience grief. An emotionally healthy person can identify and acknowledge these feelings and manage them appropriately.

‘Emotions’ and ‘mood’ are two terms that are often interpreted as meaning the same thing, but they are distinct concepts. Emotions usually relate to emotional health and wellbeing, and moods often relate to mental health and wellbeing. Emotions are often experienced in the short term, but they can be intense. Emotions are also likely to have a distinct and identifiable cause such as a disagreement with a friend, the loss of a loved one, experiencing success at school or being around people who make you happy. Mood is more closely related to mental health and wellbeing, and is usually milder than an emotion but longer lasting. In many cases, the cause of a mood is difficult to identify. For example, a person might feel particularly gloomy or optimistic for a number of days without any specific reason.

Explain an interrelationship between emotional and mental health and wellbeing.

If an individual is able to effectively identify, manage and express their emotions (emotional), this may improve their self esteem (mental). If the individual is experiencing high levels of confidence (mental) as a result of their ability to positively display their emotions, this may assist them to appropriately deal with misfortune (e.g a loss of a pet) and display resilience (emotional).

Wilfred is struggling to manage his emotions and is extremely upset and angry at the deli (emotional), even though he ate ham during his shift every day and was caught on camera. Wilfred is not displaying resilience as he is choosing to sit and home and cry rather than take part in his usual activities such as orienteering nights with his mates, which is resulting in him losing connections with his friends (social) and his sense of optimism and positivity (mental). Orienteering was his only exercise, so he is struggling to maintain a health body weight (physical). Isolating himself from his friends and orienteering has contributed to a loss of connection to the community and the world (spiritual).

Phil is a 17 year old student who has been diagnosed with influenza (the ‘flu’).

Use this information to demonstrate the interrelationship between physical and mental health and wellbeing.

  • Students receive one mark for demonstrating how physical health and wellbeing can influence mental health and wellbeing and another mark for showing how mental health and wellbeing can influence physical health and wellbeing. • Phil would be feeling tired (physical health and wellbeing) and might not be able to go to school which could cause him stress from falling behind in his studies (mental health and wellbeing). If Phil is stressed, his immune system may slow the recovery process from his condition and mean that he experiences the physical symptoms for a longer period (physical health and wellbeing).
  • By being sick, Phil may feel upset (mental health and wellbeing). He may eat foods that make him feel better mentally which could impact on his energy levels which is physical health and wellbeing. By experiencing physical symptoms of the flu (physical health and wellbeing), Phil may not have high levels of confidence in himself which is a part of mental health and wellbeing.
