Inadequate sanitation may mean that individuals in low income countries do not have access to proper toilets and therefore need to defecate on the streets. This increases the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera and can therefore increase mortality rates.

Lack of access to safe water may mean that individuals are consuming unsafe, contaminated water with disease-causing bacteria in it. This can increase their risk of contracting water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and therefore increase morbidity rates.
