Define the Indian Removal Act of 1830

The Indian Removal Act was signed by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Native American tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their lands.

The act enjoyed strong support from the people of the South, but there was a large amount of resistance from the Indian tribes, the Whig Party, and in the northeast, especially New England. The Cherokee were unsuccessful in their attempt to keep their land and were eventually forcibly removed by the United States government in a march to the west that later became known as the Trail of Tears.

What is Liberia in regards to U.S. slavery?

Henry Clay was a supporter of colonizing African Americans in Africa . American Colonization Society, founded 1816 supported the “return” of free African Americans to Africa and founding of the colony of Liberia in 1821-22 as a place for these freedmen to settle in.

Between 1821-1860s, thousands of former slaves and free black people moved to Liberia from the US. Liberia declared independence from the US in 1847. African American were largely against this relocation and the colony faced disease.

Who were the Anti-Federalists and what is their date of reference?

Anti-Federalists preferred a weak central government because they equated a strong government with British tyranny. They opposed the ratification of the 1787 Constitution. Led by Patrick Henry of Virginia, Anti-Federalists worried the position of president might evolve into a monarchy. Though the Constitution was ratified and supplanted the Articles of Confederation, Anti-Federalist influence helped lead to the passage of the United States Bill of Rights.

Definition of the Mexican-American War

Americans illegally settle in Texas, outnumbering Mexicans and Native American Indians, and bringing enslaved people (no slavery in Mexico). Texas declares itself a Republic. US and Mexican soldiers clashed in the disputed borderland between Texas and Mexico. The U.S. wins and gains more territory.

Founded by anti-slavery activists, economic modernizers, ex-Free Soilers and Whigs in 1854, the Republicans largely dominated politics nationally and in most northern states leading up to and after the Civil War. Their candidate, Abraham Lincoln was elected President in the contentious 1860 election. Civil War began the following year.

Define the First Continental Congress

55 men from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia in order to coordinate resistance to the Intolerable Acts of 1774.  They adopted Suffolk Resolves, petitioned the King, adopted the Continental Associate, planned to meet again as second Cont. congress. 1st Continental Congress became the governing body of the United States during the American Revolution.

Date and definition of Bacon's Rebellion?

An armed rebellion of indentured servants led by Nathaniel Bacon in Colonial Virginia in 1676 against the rule of Governor William Berkeley. Rebellion involved both black and white indentured servants which worried the ruling class. The biggest effect of Bacon's Rebellion was that labor in Virginia and neighboring colonies began to invest in slave labor rather than indentured servants.

England and France had both imposed a blockade to deny the other’s trade with the United States, which was officially neutral. Jefferson imposed embargo on both nations. France lifted its blockade but England did not. England also engaged in the impressment of American sailors, essentially kidnapping them for service in the Royal Navy. Britain offered freedom and land to enslaved people who ran away and fought for the British In 1814, the British invaded and captured Washington, D.C., burned the White House. The United States decisively vanquished Indian forces and gained enormous lands. U.S. and Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent which ended the war.  It ended in 1815.

Why does cotton become an important crop?

Cotton was needed for textile manufacturing in the Industrial Revolution in England, Europe, and America. Eli Whitney’s cotton gin made it easier to separate seeds from cotton.

What is the Compromise of 1790

A crucial compromise between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson with James Madison. Hamilton wanted the national government to take over and pay the state debts, while Jefferson and Madison obtained the national capital (District of Columbia) rather than New York for the South. The compromise resolved the deadlock in Congress. Southerners were blocking the assumption of state debts by the treasury.
