This era in American history followed immediately after the Civil War. (1865-1877) It tried to rebuild America with several amendments, yet with measures instilled to keep African-Americans from voting, getting jobs, etc. The South was stagnant in its development. The Compromise of 1877 ended this era of American history.

This man espoused the myth that anyone can make it big in America, if they worked hard enough. While this worked out for a few people, for the majority of the population, his statements were just myths.
