The rise of cotton led to increased slavery. It ingrained slavery into our society by being a #1 slavery crop, building an intensive marking and making slavery a necessity to allow the dependence to thrive. It represented half of the total value of American exports and the north was very dependent on cotton. Northern merchants and manufacturers participated in the slave economy and shared in its profits.
