A case the Supreme Court had to see where William Marbury (A judge appointed by John Adams on his last night of Pres.) sued James Madison (Secretary of State) for not delivering the official papers confirming Marbury's appointment. The Supreme Court ruled against Marbury and said the Judiciary Act was unconstitutional. The Constitution did not give the Supreme Court the right to decide cases brought against federal officials. The Judiciary Act increased the number of federal judges. This decision was important because it gave the Supreme Court the power to decide whether laws passed by Congress were unconstitutional and reject laws that were unconstitutional. (Judicial review).
