How did old immigrants differ from new immigrants? 500 points
Before the 1870s Old immigrants were usually Protestants from Western and Northern Europe and came to settle in the US as families and usually worked on farms. Some in later years were German and Irish who were Catholics and had some trouble due to prejudice but they still were able to blend into AMerica more especially the Irish who spoke English. The New immigrants arrived from Eastern and Southern Europe after the 1870s were usually Catholic or JEwish and were mostly unskilled, poor and lived in cities instead of Farms and they usually spoke their own languages. They often came to not settle but to work and make money and then go home.

When coming to American immigrants faced many problems. There were sometimes more people coming then there were jobs available. The living conditions were crowded and dirty. They were not paid well and the working conditions were poor (the worked hard sometimes dangerous jobs with no breaks and little pay. Immigrants were also forced to assimilated into American culture and had to deal with people treating them poorly because of negativism. Negativism means native born white Americans were superior to new people coming to American.
