Abraham Lincoln 

Was elected president in 1860 when lots of southern states were scared that he was going to try and get rid of slavery so after the South Carolina session 10 other states followed which started the Civil War. Lincoln was a republican who didn’t want slavery to spread but also did not mind if it stayed in the South. The Confederacy shot at the Union first which they should have never done because after 4 years the Union beat the Confederacy and they joined back with the U.S. Then all slaves were now free. This all happened because the confederacy was scared but it did not end well for them. Abraham Lincoln should be known as a hero before he was assassinated while watching a play.

  •  bloodiest battle in US history, Union victory gave Lincoln the chance to announce the abolition of slavery

Anaconda Plan

was a plan that the Union made for a blockade in the South so the South could not make trades and the economy would go down, Divide the confederacy threw the Mississippi River.

Expansion of federal power over states

 got rid of habeas corpus and martial law, signed the emancipation proclamation. This should normally be passed by Congress but since he was the commander-in-chief he could make lots of decisions.

Assassination of Lincoln

Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. He did this because he did not agree with Lincoln on anything including that slaves should be free, they should not be able to vote, and thought the confederacy should be back on their own and never get back with the Union. After he was assassinated this was a shock to many people because it was the first time a president had been assassinated and set a precedent that people would kill any president if they would kill them if they did not agree with what they were doing. Lots of people would stand next to the railroad when Lincoln's body passed a train to pay his respects and see him one last time.

Was a very good general for the Union and was the general when the Union won the Civil War.

Emancipation Proclamation

This happened on January 1 1863 when Lincoln declared all slaves were now free, this was a huge step for a president to make and showed the Union won and Lincoln made sure to tell people it says in the D.O.I. that all men are created equal.

Technological/weapons advancements

 mini balls, more accurate weapons/ longer distance, Ironclouds, Connons could shoot longer. Guns could shoot more rounds. Made the war more deadly because the weapons were better and could kill more people.

Sherman's March to the Sea and Him

After the battle in Atlanta Sherman led 60,000 soldiers to Savannah and told them to burn down any building they saw, steal lots of food, and make sure nothing was left standing. Soldiers were found doing this because they saw what the confederate was doing to the Union soldiers who were taken and put in jail. Showed people that the Union was going to win and the war would end very soon. The Confederacy did not stand a chance. Helped Lincoln's chance of being re-elected.

was part of the Union and a general after the Union won the battle in Atlanta they started marching to Savannah and would burn, steal, or demolish anything they passed along the way. Helped show people that Lincoln was a good president and the war would be over soon. (If this never happened Lincoln may not have won the election.)

Clara Barton

started the Red Cross Foundation during the Civil War to help people and families that were harmed during the Civil. She broke barriers because she was one of the first people to do this.

Legal protection that any arrested person must be brought before a judge to know what they are being charged with to determine if the charge is valid / if they arrested the right person.

Equality

 The Emancipation Proclamation was about ending slavery and getting the States back as one. The draft was not equal because poor people only fought. After all, rich people could pay to get out of it. Women were also involved in the war. Black people could fight after the emancipation proclamation.

A war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons they used, and the territory and combat involved. Not only attacked the army but attacked the civilians too.

Mathew Brady

Was one of the first people to take pictures of the Civil War and showed them to people who didn’t live near the Civil War to see what was truly going on. Showed lots of things that were not being talked about.

Battle of Gettysburg

was a battle where the Confederates came up into the North and lost so it was a turning point because the Confederacy would not come back into the North to fight. The battle took place in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Was a turning point.

Gettysburg Address

Lincoln was at Gettysburg to Decade the new cemetery and he went up to have a speech the speech was less than 2 minutes, 269 words Lincoln thought the speech was bad because it was so short. But the people loved this speech and made them want to keep fighting the civil war and not give up hope.

Economic effects

 The blockade and Sherman's march destroyed the South's economy. The North had an excellent economy compared to the South and they had more money to get more guns, food, and things to build. This was a big reason why the Union was so much stronger than the Confederacy.  So they won the war.

Battle of Vicksburg

 was a battle that was a main turning point in the Civil War because the Union took advantage of the West which could divide the confederacy into two parts. It would be hard to get people, guns, and ammo from one side of the confederacy to the other. This took place near the Mississippi River.

General Lee's Surrenders to the Union was the last major battle of the Civil War. This means the confederacy went back to the Union once the U.S. again.

Draft (Confederate and Union)

a mob of New Yorkers wrecked the main recruiting station, then for 3 days white workers marched through the city destroying everything they saw because they were upset with the draft they called it a rich man's war a poor man's fight because rich people would pay to get out of the war and people were not happy about this and the people of color were not being put into the drafts.
