Where: Red River Colony (now Manitoba)

Why: over the sale of Rupert’s Land. The Métis were concerned about their rights, way of life, and cultural/economic well-being.

Métis formed a provisional government to negotiate with the Canadian government.

Tensions escalated when a survey crew arrived, which led to the Métis resisting. The Métis captured many Canadian officials

The Métis created the Bill of Rights to negotiate Manitoba’s entry into Confederation. The goal was to protect their language and culture.
