  1. Union commander was General George McClellan and the Confederate commander was General Robert E. Lee. Battle was in Maryland, September 1862.  The single bloodiest day in US History.  Over 20,000 men were wounded, killed, or missing.

 Lincoln gave this speech for the dedication of a national cemetery at Gettysburg.  In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln asked the country to honor those that gave their lives protecting our democratic government.
