What was the role of women is feudal Japan?

They were the backbone of the family, protected and cared for the family. They also had rights to own land, train as samurai, and high ranking women would be married to other high ranking men.

What was the role of the manor?

The manor was the center of economic trade and activity. All products from the surrounding estate was brought into the manor so all trade was conducted in the manor.

The lord and his family lived in the manor and sometimes knights as well. The nobles rarely left since all they needed was in the manor. However the lord would go around to survey the knights and serfs and sometimes provide them with benefits and bonuses.

How was medieval European hygiene? Describe some of the habits.

Hygiene was poor. Serfs would go to the bathroom in a wooden bucket and only pour it out when it was full or just go in the bushes. They rarely took baths or showers. The streets were covered in feces and stool. Nobles and kings had a bathroom with a reusable bottom-wipe stick but still rarely bathed.

How did main styles of poetry in Japan and Europe differ?

Europe enjoyed long, story heavy poems like epics. Japan had haikus which were artful, simplistic, and witty pieces of poetry that had a strict form. Haikus are traditionally about nature.

What changes occurred in Europe after the fall of Rome?

Organized gov, trade, and learning declined and cities disappeared. People scrambled in unorganized skirmishes for land and many small kingdoms popped up.

Why did the Japanese nobles wear very pale makeup?

Because if you worked in the fields, you became tanner so light skin showed wealth, power, and many servants. It was also desirable in looks.

Serfs farmed the land, made food, did the hard labor and dirty work, were the foundation of the feudal system, and were tied to the land.

What are some differences in feudal Japan and Europe?

Europe had christianity, epic poetry, encouraged children to work, and women had few rights. Japan had Shintoism, Zen Buddhism, haikus, great appreciation to arts, women had rights, and children were encouraged to play.

What was the MANOR SYSTEM?

A way for lords to organize the feudal system since there was no central gov lords and nobles lived in manors like small kingdoms. Wealth and power was controlled by how many serfs worked for the lord. MANOR => Large house or castle for lords and fam. It was similar to a plantation. The Estate was the property around it.

Weddings are like shinto ceremonies, haiku poems are still popular, and Japanese today have a strong sense of duty, loyalty, and honor.

What was feudalism? (in detail)

Feudalism was a medieval social hierarchy where the Kings gave land to Nobles who granted fiefs to Knights who governed Serfs. Nobles had the most power since all the lower classes swore loyalty to them. Knights took care of the land, protected it, and kept the serfs in place.

What led to the growth of towns in Medieval Europe?

Lords became more powerful and brought peace and stability to larger regions of land. Towns flourished in peaceful times and so did trade.
