What was sharecropping?

A farming system that came out of need for land by the newly freed slaves, and plantation owners needed people to work the land. Planters divided their land into small plots and leased those out to individual farmers, who usually paid the plantation owners with a portion of their crop to live on that land. Few earned enough to pay back, so this usually led to a lifetime of debt.
