Butterflies start their lives as tiny eggs laid on leaves by adult butterflies. These eggs hatch into caterpillars, which are the larva stage of the butterfly's life cycle. Caterpillars eat leaves and grow very quickly. After a few weeks, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, which is the pupa stage. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly with wings. When the butterfly is ready, it emerges from the chrysalis and flies away. This cycle then repeats as the adult butterfly lays more eggs to start the process over again.  What is the main idea of this passage?

The Busy World of Bees

Bees are fascinating creatures that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. From the flowers in our gardens to the crops in the fields, bees are busy pollinating plants around us. A single bee might visit thousands of flowers in one day. Without bees, we wouldn't have many fruits and vegetables we enjoy eating.

Bees live in hives and work together in a highly organized society. Each bee has a specific job. Some bees are gatherers, flying from flower to flower, collecting pollen and nectar to bring back to the hive. Other bees stay in the hive and care for the young or larvae. There is also a queen bee, the only bee that lays eggs.

Despite their small size, bees have a big impact on the environment. They help plants grow, breed, and produce food by moving pollen between the male and female parts of flowers, a process known as pollination. Pollination is essential for the production of seeds in most flowering plants.

What job do gatherer bees do?

A) They take care of the larvae.

B) They collect pollen and nectar from flowers.

At one time, every continent in the world had giant tortoises. A tortoise is like a turtle, but tortoises live only on land.  A tortoise can grow to be five feet long. It can weigh up to 500 pounds. There are 12 different kinds of these giant animals. The biggest difference is in the shape of their shells. They can have a high, round shell while others are flatter.

For many reasons, giant tortoises can now be found only on a few islands. Most giant tortoises live on the Galápagos [ga-LA-puh-gus] Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Their numbers have been going down for hundreds of years. But now people are helping them to return.   Many of the Galápagos tortoise’s problems started with people. Galápagos tortoises like to eat grass. Hundreds of years ago, people brought goats to the Galápagos Islands. The goats ate so much grass that there was nothing for the tortoises to eat. Also, sailors took the tortoises onto their ships and used them for food. Around 40 years ago, some people wanted to help the tortoises so they took the goats away from the islands. There are now more Galápagos tortoises than there were 40 years ago. Let’s hope the number of these amazing animals continues to grow!

What is the main idea?
