Why was Stanley surprised that X-Ray was the leader of the group?
Stanley was surprised because X-Ray was small and did not look strong. He expected a leader to be bigger or tougher. However, X-Ray was smart and respected, so the other boys followed him.

The Warden knows all of their names because there are microphones and cameras everywhere.

The one-legged Gypsy, Madame Zeroni, put a curse on Stanley’s family because Stanley’s great-great-grandfather did not keep a promise. He promised to carry her up a mountain and sing to her, but he forgot. Because of this, the family believed they were unlucky for many generations.
Why did Madame Zeroni give Elya a piglet?
Madame Zeroni gave Elya a piglet to help him marry Myra. She told him to carry the piglet up a mountain every day and let it drink from a special spring. If he did this, the pig would grow strong and Myra would choose him.
How do we know that more than just Stanley's hands had become calloused during his stay at the camp?
He laughs when Zero asks him to teach him how to read and write. He is not empathetic.

Elya refused because he realized Myra did not truly love him. She was willing to choose her husband by picking a number, which made Elya feel that marriage should be about love, not luck or money. He became disappointed and left.
Why was Stanley having trouble sleeping?
Stanley knew that they were digging in the wrong spot. The golden tube was found in Stanley's hole, not X-Ray's, but they were digging near X-Ray's hole because the Warden thought that was where the treasure came from.

Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake because he was accused of stealing a famous baseball player’s shoes. The shoes belonged to Clyde “Sweet Feet” Livingston. However, Stanley did not really steal them — they fell from the sky.
Why did Stanley refer to the fossil as his miracle?
Stanley called the fossil his miracle because he hoped it would change his life at Camp Green Lake. He thought if he found something important, the Warden would reward him and he would not have to dig holes anymore.
